Born in Oklahoma City. Married thrice. Court-marshaled in 1968 for refusing to interrogate Vietcong prisoners. Lived in Tripoli. Also Texas, Costa Rica, Madrid, The Canary Islands, The Netherlands, LA, Big Sur, Peru, Hawaii, and Nashville.
Autos: Rebuilt a 1947 Cub Tractor, put 30,000 north African sand miles on a ‘64 Austin Healey, fell in love with ‘67 Lotus Elan. (In between: Triumph, MGB, Mercedes, BMW, VW and 3 Jeeps.)
Music: Jammed with Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark and Jimmy Buffet. Hung with Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Kimmel, Stone Ponies, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Peter Tork and Marty Robbins. Shot Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Kitty Wells, Honey Boy Edwards and Cowboy Jack Clement.
Jobs (early): Crossing guard, pizza flipper, guitar player, pharmacy clerk, roughneck, dishwasher, Army.
Of note: held at gunpoint for 3 hours, arrested for grand theft auto (not guilty), busted (possession/cannabis) in Waco (1969) and Philadelphia (1985)….never convicted. And so on.
